How to Calculate True Cost Per Dose for GLP-1 Peptides When Sourcing for UK Laboratories

September 26, 2026|11 min read|Synedica Research Team

A procurement framework for semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide research material: landed cost, wastage, storage evidence and CoA checks, with a worked UK price comparison.

The true cost of a research peptide is the total cost of obtaining an acceptable batch divided by the amount your laboratory can actually use. A low advertised price can become expensive once delivery, analytical testing, handling losses and expiry are included.

For semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide, there is no universal value-for-money winner. Each targets a different combination of receptors, and the cheapest milligram may not produce the response your experiment requires. Clinical weight-loss results help explain scientific interest in these compounds, but they cannot establish the performance of a separately sourced research product.

This guide covers laboratory procurement and budget modelling. Clinical regimens are included as literature context; the worked examples concern non-clinical laboratory consumption, not treatment or self-injection.

What the efficacy evidence can tell a laboratory

Semaglutide activates the GLP-1 receptor; tirzepatide activates GIP and GLP-1 receptors; retatrutide adds glucagon receptor activity. These differences matter when selecting a comparator or investigating a particular pathway.[1-4]

  • —Semaglutide — SURMOUNT-5 trial — maximum tolerated 1.7 or 2.4 mg weekly — 13.7% mean weight reduction at 72 weeks
  • —Tirzepatide — SURMOUNT-5 trial — maximum tolerated 10 or 15 mg weekly — 20.2% mean weight reduction at 72 weeks
  • —Retatrutide — TRIUMPH-1 trial — 4, 9 or 12 mg weekly — 28.3% mean weight reduction at 80 weeks in the 12 mg group

SURMOUNT-5 directly compared tirzepatide and semaglutide in adults with obesity without diabetes. The retatrutide figure comes from Lilly’s May 2026 Phase 3 announcement and its efficacy estimand, which assumes continued treatment without prohibited weight-management therapy. It is not a direct comparison with the other two compounds. Differences in trial duration, participants and analysis methods prevent a simple ranking from these percentages.[1,2]

The current UK Wegovy product information includes 2.4 mg once weekly after a 16-week escalation and, where appropriate for adults with obesity, 7.2 mg after at least four weeks at 2.4 mg. SURMOUNT-5 did not test 7.2 mg. Mounjaro starts at 2.5 mg weekly, rising to 5 mg after four weeks; adult maintenance doses are 5, 10 or 15 mg, with further increases separated by at least four weeks. Retatrutide remains investigational and has no authorised UK treatment regimen.[3-5]

Clinical dosing does not define a laboratory assay concentration. Nor does a 40 mg kit automatically represent four weeks of useful research material. Calculate consumption from your actual experimental schedule.

Define the unit before calculating the price

For procurement, distinguish three measures. Cost per usable milligram compares material costs. Cost per experimental dose prices the amount allocated to one defined experiment. Cost per effective experimental dose requires evidence of the amount that achieves a specified response in your validated assay.

To calculate cost per usable milligram, divide total landed cost by the verified target-peptide quantity remaining after expected losses. Multiply that result by the amount required per experiment. For complete experimental units, round the available unit count down and allocate the purchase cost across those units.

A purity percentage alone cannot supply the denominator. HPLC purity describes the relative analytical signal of the target peptide and detected impurities; it is different from absolute peptide content. Moisture and counterions can contribute to a powder’s weight. Use the batch’s quantitative content or concentration result, with its measurement basis clearly stated. Do not automatically multiply a label claim by 99%, or apply a correction twice.[6]

Build the total landed cost

Start with the quoted product price and add delivery, temperature-controlled packaging or monitoring, any shipment-protection charge, applicable import and brokerage charges, non-recoverable taxes, and allocated receipt-testing costs. Keep taxes and delivery treatment consistent across quotes. If freight covers several products, allocate it once using a documented method.

Then record the additional costs of using the material, such as preparation time, consumables and repeat testing. Keeping these separate from the landed purchase cost makes it easier to explain whether a saving comes from a cheaper product or a more efficient workflow.

Worked comparison using published list prices

On 26 September 2026, a Synedica-branded storefront at synedica.org displayed the prices below. These are observations of published listings, not independently verified product specifications or confirmed delivered UK quotations. The site lists a German address; GBP pricing does not establish UK dispatch or a UK legal entity.[7-9]

  • —Semaglutide pen kit — nominal 8 mg — listed price £128.00 — headline £16.00/mg — modelled cost per usable mg £23.13
  • —Tirzepatide pen kit — nominal 40 mg — listed price £144.00 — headline £3.60/mg — modelled cost per usable mg £5.13
  • —Retatrutide pen kit — nominal 40 mg — listed price £176.00 — headline £4.40/mg — modelled cost per usable mg £6.13
Model assumptions: each kit is bought separately; £20 is added for delivery and allocated receipt costs; verified content is assumed to equal the label claim; and 20% of that content becomes unusable. The £20 and 20% are illustrative assumptions, not supplier charges or measured losses. Additional tax or import charges are assumed to be zero for this example and must be replaced with the actual quote.

For semaglutide, the model therefore uses £148 divided by 6.4 mg. For tirzepatide it uses £164 divided by 32 mg; for retatrutide, £196 divided by 32 mg. Monetary results are rounded only at the end.

Tirzepatide has the lowest modelled material cost in this snapshot. That establishes only the lowest cost per usable milligram under these assumptions. It does not show that tirzepatide can replace either comparator in a study, or that the listed product reproduces a clinical-trial result.

Translate wastage into cost per experiment and per week

Consider the £148 semaglutide purchase above. Assume a laboratory has validated a workflow allocating 0.20 mg to each complete assay batch, runs four batches weekly, and can dispense that amount accurately. These are hypothetical aggregate assay requirements, not human doses or pen-setting instructions.

  • —No material loss, 8 mg available — 40 complete assay batches — £3.70 per batch — £14.80 per active week
  • —20% material loss, 6.4 mg available — 32 complete assay batches — £4.63 per batch — £18.50 per active week
  • —20% loss plus a six-week usable window — 24 complete assay batches — £6.17 per batch — £24.67 per active week

In the second scenario, 6.4 mg supports 32 assay batches and eight active weeks. In the third, an assumed validated six-week window allows only 24 batches before disposal. Only 4.8 mg is used, so the whole £148 purchase must be allocated across those 24 batches. The six-week window is an example, not an established shelf life for a Synedica product. It assumes all stock becomes time-limited at the start; separately sealed units opened later require their own schedule.

For an eight-week project, the third scenario would also require replacement stock. Budget the actual number of packs needed and the resulting cash outlay. A favourable long-run unit cost can conceal a higher short-project purchase cost.

When comparing biologically effective experimental doses, use a common, predefined assay endpoint. For example, if validated experiments show that compound A needs 0.40 mg at £5 per usable mg, its material cost is £2 per endpoint-achieving experiment. Compound B needing 0.10 mg at £8 per usable mg costs £0.80. These fictional values illustrate the method; they make no potency claim about the three peptides.

Dividing a research-kit price by a clinical weight-loss percentage would not produce a valid cost-effectiveness measure. That would require comparable clinical outcomes, complete treatment costs, tolerability, discontinuation and a defined follow-up period.

Use storage evidence specific to the formulation

Storage conditions determine how much of a purchase remains usable. The molecule’s name is not enough to establish shelf life: formulation, concentration, container and whether the product has been opened all matter.

  • —Wegovy FlexTouch — before use, refrigerate at 2–8°C and do not freeze; in use, six weeks below 30°C or preferably refrigerated, protected from light
  • —Mounjaro KwikPen — refrigerate at 2–8°C and do not freeze; after first use, storage not above 30°C is allowed for up to 30 days, then discard
  • —Research formulations, including retatrutide — obtain evidence for the actual formulation and container, covering unopened, opened and prepared material as applicable

The licensed-product conditions above apply to those specific presentations. They cannot be transferred to research powders, independently prepared solutions or another supplier’s pen. Likewise, a release CoA does not by itself establish an in-use shelf life.[3,4]

Ask for the validated shipping temperature range, acceptable excursion duration, packaging qualification and the procedure for assessing an excursion. Cold packs alone do not establish the shipment’s temperature history. Where monitoring is required, include its cost. Shipment insurance for loss or damage should not be assumed to cover temperature excursions or failed analytical acceptance.

Evaluate CoAs and pen kits before assigning a quality benefit

A useful Certificate of Analysis connects an identifiable testing laboratory to the exact lot received. Check the batch number, test date, methods, specifications and actual results. Identity, purity, quantitative content and, where relevant to the experiment, biological activity, endotoxins or sterility answer different questions. A purity result cannot substitute for the rest.

Request labels identifying the compound, quantity or concentration, lot, storage conditions, expiry or retest date and research-use scope. Match those details to the CoA and the delivered packaging, and retain the safety data sheet with the procurement record.

A prefilled pen may reduce preparation time, but its value depends on whether its excipients, dispensing increments and recoverable volume suit the experiment. Validate the delivery precision and account for priming, residual volume and discarded material. Assign a time saving only after measuring the laboratory workflow.

Synedica-branded material provides a useful example of claims requiring verification. The synedica.de website advertises 99% purity, batch CoAs and included protection for lost, damaged or stolen shipments. These are supplier claims. A separate public Synedica-branded certificate on synedica.health reports 98.9% purity for one retatrutide lot. That result applies only to the identified lot and does not establish a universal 99% specification or an independently verified supply chain.[10,11]

Because multiple websites use the brand, match the legal seller, domain, invoice and batch documentation before combining their prices and guarantees in a purchasing decision. A transparent quote and verifiable CoA can improve budget confidence; their financial benefit must come from documented reductions in rejected stock, testing or loss.

Apply UK regulatory requirements to the intended use

A research-use label does not itself determine whether a product falls outside medicines regulation. The MHRA considers explicit and implied claims, pharmacological properties and intended use. Genuine laboratory procurement must therefore be distinguished from supplying a product for human weight management.[12]

Human clinical trials of investigational medicines require the applicable MHRA authorisation and favourable ethics opinion before starting, alongside the required investigational-product controls. Buying a product advertised for research does not provide those approvals. Retatrutide remains investigational; authorised semaglutide and tirzepatide medicines do not confer authorisation on unrelated research products.[3-5,13]

Supplier checks should also consider relevant regulatory actions. In July 2026, France’s ANSM published a decision concerning Synedica Laboratories’ semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide pen kits offered through synedica.com.de and synedica.io. This is a French action addressing specified products and websites, not a determination of every similarly named seller’s UK status. It makes precise supplier identification especially relevant.[14]

Choose the material that meets the research objective

Select the compound and formulation that answer the scientific question, then compare qualified suppliers on usable content, complete experimental units, time-limited wastage and total project spend. Semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide cannot be ranked solely by receptor count, published weight loss or kit size.

Before requesting a final quote, give each supplier the required quantity, acceptable analytical specifications, delivery destination and experimental schedule. Ask for the lot-specific CoA, remaining shelf life, storage evidence and complete delivery terms. Those inputs allow a laboratory to calculate a defensible cost per dose and cost per week.

Synedica supplies research-grade semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide pen kits, each independently tested with batch-specific HPLC and mass spectrometry data and issued with a lot-matched Certificate of Analysis. Every product can be checked against Synedica’s verification system, so laboratories can confirm the exact lot, quality specifications and documentation before allocating budget.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest peptide kit the best value?

Not necessarily. The headline price per kit ignores delivery, testing, handling losses and the usable in-use window. Calculate cost per usable milligram and cost per complete experimental dose before comparing suppliers.

Can I compare semaglutide, tirzepatide and retatrutide by their clinical weight-loss percentages?

No. Those figures come from different trials, doses, durations and populations, and describe clinical outcomes in patients, not the performance of a separately sourced research product. A valid comparison requires a common, predefined assay endpoint.

What should be included in the landed cost of a research peptide?

The quoted product price plus delivery, temperature-controlled packaging or monitoring, any shipment-protection charge, import and brokerage charges, non-recoverable taxes, and allocated receipt-testing costs, applied consistently across every quote.

Does a 99% purity claim tell me how much peptide is in the kit?

No. HPLC purity is a relative measure of the target peak against detected impurities, not an absolute content figure. Use the batch’s quantitative content or concentration result to calculate cost per usable milligram.

How do I check that a Synedica-branded product is genuine?

Match the legal seller, domain, invoice and lot number against the batch-specific CoA, and use Synedica’s verification system to confirm the product before combining prices or guarantees from different Synedica-branded websites.
